Plebesly finally runs down not just one but three rioters, arresting them one at a time until he confronts the last. In a class of new police recruits, Augustus Plebesly is fast and scared.
Unlike most books around these days the author is concerned with te.ling a story not making political points so what the book reveals arises from the story and isn't imposed on it. The novel was adapted as a film of the same name starring George C. Scott and Stacy Keach. Feeling he married too young, he feels trapped in his marriage. He speaks little Spanish. Joseph Wambaugh's first novel, depicting the lives of three LA policemen in the 1960's. I read this the first time back in the early 70's and I loved it then.

The humorous side of a 27-year career in law enforcement. Plebesly has observed decent young officers like Rantlee becoming racist, apparently helpless to stop their changes. He participated in it personally as an officer.
There is roughly a fourty year gap between when I first read this book and this second reading. The book is about three Los Angeles Policemen from their academy graduation in 1960 until they meet again during the 1965 Watts riots.
Some of them pretty mundane but perhaps intentional to demonstrate that police work is not always exciting.
Re-reading it just reinforced how great a novel it is (and unbelievably a first novel) and why it's a classic. A stunningly good book. Thursday 9-5 | Friday 9-8 | Saturday 8-4, Catering to the book lovers of South Jersey The New Centurions, was one of three full-length fictional works Wambaugh wrote while still working in law enforcement in the 1960s; it follows three young men through their police training and early years on the LAPD force, with their fifth year of service coinciding with the historic Watts (California) race riots of Summer, 1965. The author wrote the novel, his first, while he was still a working member of the Los Angeles Police Department. I sort of gave up after the vice squad chapters. The New Centurions is likely the most autobiographical of Wambaugh's novels.
Just twenty-six years of age, Roy Fehler has devolved into Whitey Duncan.
There is roughly a fourty year gap between when I first read this book and this second reading. It's an incredibly well-written and deep novel. Roy Fehler is full of ideals. He worked in a bank before joining the LAPD, has earned a few college credits, but sought a job with higher status and better pay. Reading the book again all these years later, I notice how some problems are still around like the racism that came to light in the trials of Rodney King and O.J. People of a sensitive nature will find much of the material offensive.
Please enter your name. The novel, in which Wambaugh narrates almost equal parts promise, resignation, and tragedy, is a good example of police during a pervious era.
I did not expect the officers to be angels, but I feel the author treated people as stereotyp.
Of course for those who did not grow up in this era, some of the things might be a little difficult to relate to, seem a little odd, outdated, or maybe unbelievable. Go to our Indonesia store to continue. For half the chapter he is pinned down behind a fire engine by a sniper, protecting his stomach from further injury and reflecting that, even in the chaos of South Central Los Angeles, he has found peace in his life by being with Laura.
The subject field is required. If you want to see the world as a policeman sees it you should read this. Wambaugh also explores the officers' private lives, noting adultery, alcoholism, racism and suicide as rampant in the ranks of the LAPD. Written by Wambaugh in the late 60's when he was a young policeman, it is free of any and all of the political correctness and tolerance taken for granted now by most of us; poor African Americans, Latinos, gay men, lesbian women are dangerous animals, criminal deviants and the game of the hunter, namely, the “paddy blue eyed motherfu….ers.” In Wambaugh. His assignment to University Division (now LAPD's "Southwest Area") intensifies his fears.
We follow three L.A.P.D. officers for five years (1960-1965) joining them as they are entering the academy and following them up to and through the riots in the Watts area of Los Angeles in 1965.
Hunting killers, rousting whores, quelling gang wars, fighting corruption, they risk death every day...every night. The wound is slow to heal, Fehler endures a colostomy, and he is forced to live with his parents, where his job and injury are scorned and ridiculed. Fehler had wandered into an academic major of criminology but had grown tired of college studies and joined the LAPD on the pretext of gaining several years' firsthand experience about crime and criminals.
Deluding himself that he had avoided a dependency on drugs, Fehler begins drinking, hiding bottles in both the trunk of his car and in callboxes.
